How to make a dot-to-dot puzzle
- Upload a drawing, photo or coloring page. Drag a JPG or PNG (max 10 MB) into the upload zone, or click to pick one from your files. A simple black outline on a white background works best.
- Drag over the lines. Sweep the cursor (or your finger on tablet) over the lines you want to keep in the puzzle. Adjust the brush size for more or less precision.
- Pick the number of dots. Slide the dots slider to set the level: around 20 dots for preschoolers, 40 for lower primary, 70 or more for older children.
- Give the puzzle a title. Optional: type a title at the top, for example "Duck for Lisa". It will appear at the top of the printout.
- Adjust the dots. Click a dot to remove it, or click the silhouette edge to add a new one. This lets you fine-tune both difficulty and shape.
- Download or print. Click "Download PNG", "Download PDF" or "Print". The printout fills an A4 in portrait orientation, ready to hand out.
Frequently asked questions
What is a dot-to-dot puzzle?
A dot-to-dot puzzle (also called connect-the-dots) is a drawing where numbered dots are connected in order. By drawing a line from 1 to 2 to 3 and so on, the picture gradually appears. It's a classic children's activity that exercises counting sequence, fine motor skills and concentration.
What age are dot-to-dot puzzles for?
Dot-to-dot puzzles are suitable from about 3 years old. For toddlers and preschoolers (3-5 years), puzzles with 10 to 20 dots work best. Children aged 6 to 8 can handle 30 to 50 dots, and from 8 years on, 70 or more dots is a fun challenge. With our generator you can set the number of dots between 10 and 150, so the puzzle always fits the right age.
What do dot-to-dot puzzles teach children?
Dot-to-dot puzzles practise several skills at once in a playful way: number recognition and counting sequence (first up to 20, then to 50 or 100), fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through drawing the lines, and concentration and perseverance. It's also a calm, screen-free activity that many parents and teachers look for.
Are dot-to-dot puzzles for adults too?
Yes. With a maximum of 150 dots you can make puzzles adults enjoy too — as a relaxing activity, for mindfulness or in a therapeutic setting. For very large adult puzzles (400 to 800 dots), specialised sites are more suitable, but for casual use our generator works fine.
Is the dot-to-dot generator free?
Yes, the tool is completely free and works without an account. You can download or print as many puzzles as you want.
Which image works best for a dot-to-dot puzzle?
Simple black outline drawings on a white background give the cleanest result. One clear main figure without much decoration around it works best — think of an animal, object or character in line-drawing style. Photos, gradients and colourful backgrounds give less clean results. AI-generated coloring pages, scans of worksheets and your own drawings can all be used as a starting point.
How many dots can I set?
The number of dots is adjustable between 10 and 150. About 20 dots works well for preschoolers, 40 for lower primary, and 70 or more for older children.
Does it work on a tablet or phone?
Yes, the generator works on desktop, tablet and phone. On touch screens you can drag your finger over the lines to pick out details.
Can I print the puzzle on A4?
Yes — pick "Print" to print directly, or "Download PDF" for an A4 PDF. Both fill an A4 page in portrait orientation without cropping.
Are my images stored on the server?
No, the whole puzzle is generated in your browser. Your coloring page never leaves your device and is not stored anywhere.
